 Disseminating Innovative Resources and Technologies to Smallholders (DIRTS)

Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) is a United States-based non-profit organization dedicated to creating, evaluating and replicating innovative solutions to poverty and policy problems worldwide. IPA specializes in using the randomized controlled trial methodology to evaluate the impact of development programs.

IPA Ghana seeks a Communications Associate to create attractive, effective outreach materials for the Disseminating Innovative Resources and Technologies to Smallholders (DIRTS) project, to share the valuable knowledge that the project is generating and increase the visibility of the organization. The Communications Associate should blend together excellent written communication skills with an interest in providing decision makers with evidence on effective solutions to poverty problems.

The DIRTS project seeks to understand the barriers that smallholder farmers in Northern Ghana face to successfully increasing the profitability of their agricultural business. Using the randomized controlled trial methodology, the study tests the relative impact of intensive extension services and improved input supply chains. During the project’s life-cycle, a wealth of information is collected on farming practices, livelihoods, agricultural yields, etc. Lead Principal Investigators on the DIRTS study are Dean Karlan and Christopher Udry of Yale University. The study’s interventions are implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the Ghana Insurers Association and several other partners.

Job description

The role of the Communications Associate (CA) will be to package the information collected by the project teams for effective outreach to a wide range of stakeholders including local and international policy makers, NGOs, farmers, private sector, and the general public.

Specifically, the CA will:

  • Assist with planning, development, and delivery of external communication activities, on a monthly and quarterly basis (e.g. newsletters, media reports, project information briefs, blogs)
  • Write donor reports in collaboration with Project Coordinators and ensure timely submission of donor deliverables
  • Establish a system or method for gathering feedback on the DIRTS dissemination material and activities to gain lessons learned for future productions
  • Keep the project team informed on public debates and maintain a calendar of relevant events in the agriculture sector in Ghana
  • Organize workshops, meetings and conferences for the project, and write related activity reports
  • Manage and populate a project photograph and video database
  • Develop and contribute to the implementation of a communication plan for IPA Ghana’s agriculture projects
  • Work closely with the IPA Ghana Policy Team and the Communications Team at the IPA head office, to improve the outreach strategies for the organization

Period: Employment period: 1 year (3 months’ probation) – renewable based on performance

Start date: ASAP

Required Skills or Experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Marketing, Journalism, Communication, Economics or related field. Master’s degree preferred
  • Fluency in written and verbal communication in English is essential (Publication standard)
  • Detail oriented, fast learning, team player, able to work with minimal supervision
  • Proficiency in all or most of the following software: Publisher, Word, Power Point, Excel, Photoshop or other graphics editors
  • Previously published articles, media productions/publications for various audiences (academic, government, research organizations, business-oriented and non-profit stakeholders)
  • At least 2 years’ demonstrated experience working on communications, and/or business development
  • Experience using online media tools (e.g. dropbox, Box, Google docs, piktochart)
  • Experience in donor reporting (e.g. USAID, DFID or World Bank) preferred
  • Professional experience or personal interest/passion for photography/video-making preferred
  • Strong interest in turning research into policy
