Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) is a United States-based non-profit organization dedicated to creating, evaluating and replicating innovative solutions to poverty and policy problems worldwide. IPA specializes in using the randomized controlled trial methodology to evaluate the impact of development programs.
IPA Ghana seeks a Research Assistant to conduct research in support of the Disseminating Innovative Resources and Technologies to Smallholders (DIRTS) project. The RA should blend excellent research skills with good writing ability.
Lead Principal Investigators on the DIRTS study are Dean Karlan and Christopher Udry of Yale University. The study’s interventions are implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the Ghana Insurers Association and several other partners. Evaluation of the project occurs via a series of electronic and paper surveys with randomly selected respondent households. This position will be based in Tamale, Northern Region.
Job Description:
The RA will;
• Undertake basic agricultural research specifically in agronomy, making use of standard research techniques and methods
• Conduct literature review of existing materials, making use of available online resources or databases and interviewing agricultural specialists
• Prepare a report on literature review of agricultural extension manuals and messages under the guidance of the supervising Research Consultant
• Contribute to the planning and production of scholarly articles, reports and publications by the supervising Research Consultant
• Assist in preliminary analysis of survey data
• Perform any other duties as requested commensurate with the grade and nature of the post
Employment period: three months
Start date: December 2014
Qualification Required & Experience
• A Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Social Sciences or related field, Masters degree preferred
• Fluency in written and verbal communication in English is essential. (Publication standard)
• Previous publication experience is preferred;
• At least 2 years’ demonstrated experience in conducting desk research and report writing;
• Strong computer skills including proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel and email;
• Exceptional data processing and analysis skills;
• Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks, work under pressure and meet deadlines, often with limited supervision;
• Strong organizational and administrative skills;
