Senior Project Manager Somalia, BBC Media Action

Job Introduction

BBC Media Action has worked in Somalia since 2003 and are starting a new governance project to support the electoral process across Somalia. BBC Media Action is committed to strengthening the media in Somalia. We have worked to train and support journalists, editors and management staff to improve professional standards and ensure greater stability for local media. In partnership with the BBC Somali Service, BBC Media Action has supported the reporting of major public issues such as the draft constitution process, it increased literacy skills, and helped farmers to improve their income through specialist radio programming. The new project on the electoral process, will involve producing national radio programmes, training journalists and supporting partner radio stations to produce their own programmes.

Role Responsibility

  • Ensure that the BBC Media Action project in Somalia are delivered on time, on budget, to high standards and according to donor commitments in consultation with the editorial team, the research team and finance.
  • Support the creative development, editorial direction and production management of radio and social media outputs.
  • Provide editorial leadership, ensuring all outputs adhere to BBC editorial standards.
  • Help ensure that broadcast outputs are produced in an integrated and coherent manner, ensuring high editorial and production standards and the most efficient use of resources.
  • Ensure that the specific development objectives of the projects, as defined in project design and theory of change and informed by research findings, are fully reflected in the broadcast outputs.
  • Build project management capacity and support staff development in production and other editorial processes.
  • Manage the project’s branding, marketing and promotion within Somalia and elsewhere in close coordination with BBC Media Action’s Communications team and other parts of the BBC.
  • Develop and manage effective relationships with funding agencies, stakeholders and partners, as well as with advisors and other staff in BBC Media Action headquarters and the wider BBC.

Are you the right candidate?

  • Considerable experience developing and managing complex projects, ideally in the development sector.
  • Demonstrable understanding and commitment to international development, including the use of media for developmental goals.
  • Experience in the effective management of diverse international teams, including personnel development and capability management.
  • Strong financial management skills, including experience of managing large budgets and knowledge of the reporting requirements of funders.
  • Proven ability to develop and secure new business, including ability to develop new business ideas and present these persuasively to potential partners and funders, and write successful proposals.
  • Experience of working with radio production staff.
  • Confident public speaker with experience of presentations to colleagues, donors and stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiating and diplomatic skills, including experience working with colleagues whose first language is not English.
