Job Introduction
BBC Media Action was founded in 1999 by the BBC as its international development charity. We apply the editorial standards of the BBC, build on its values and often work closely with the BBC World Service and other BBC departments. However, we are legally and financially independent and work to a distinct mission. Our aim is to inform, connect and empower people around the world.As an independent charity, we are not funded by the BBC licence fee.  Our work is made possible thanks to the support of our generous donors – governments, foundations, corporations and individuals.This post will provide leadership to further BBC Media Action’s strategies and support in governance and rights.  The ideal candidate will be someone who brings expertise, knowledge and leadership on how media and communication in a development context can best support:Civic and political empowerment and participationUnderstanding and upholding of fundamental rights and freedomsFree and fair electionsAccountability (of those in positions of power)Combating the threats of mis/disinformation. Role ResponsibilityImproving the quality of governance and rights projects that BBC Media Action delivers by developing and articulating effective strategies and approaches and providing expert advice on how the organisation can be innovative and achieve impact in this area.Work closely with other BBC Media Action teams (particularly the Programmes/ Regional teams, Research and Editorial Development) to improve the quality of project delivery, research and evidence generation and learning in the governance and rights thematic area.Play a lead role in external engagement in the governance and rights space.  This will involve representing BBC Media Action externally (including at high-level meetings and public presentations), forging relationships with major external partners, stakeholders and funding bodies.Are you the right candidate?Extensive experience of working with governance and human rights, particularly in relation to supporting: civic and political empowerment and participation; understanding and upholding of fundamental rights and freedoms; free and fair elections; accountability (of those in positions of power); combating the threats of mis/disinformation. Strong understanding of the international development system, particularly in relation to governance and rights and major political and social accountability initiatives.Knowledge and understanding of how media and communication can achieve impact on governance and rights outcomes.  Knowledge of how this happens in the digital space desired.Capacity to exercise intellectual leadership on the theme of governance and rights and engage with relevant external research and policy agendas, linking these creatively to the programming and thinking of BBC Media Action.Extensive contacts and networking ability within the field of governance and rights.Package Description
