The BecA-ILRI Hub seeks to recruit a Project Coordinator whose focus will be to manage and coordinate a new collaborative project between Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia, and the Biosciences eastern and central Africa – International Livestock Research Institute (BecA-ILRI) Hub. The position: ILRI seeks to recruit a research and policy analyst to join a small team of professionals working on the Regional Strategic Analysis and Knowledge Support System (ReSAKSS) program for Eastern and Central Africa (ECA). The objective of ReSAKSS is to provide analysis, data, and tools to promote evidence-based decision making, improve awareness of the role of agriculture for development in Africa, fill knowledge gaps, promote dialogue, and facilitate the implementation of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development and the African Union Commission and other regional agricultural development initiatives in Africa. The successful candidate will work with the ReSAKSS node based at ILRI-Nairobi which is set up to serve the COMESA region.
Specific duties will include:
1.    Undertaking analytical work based on regional priorities in agriculture and rural development. Areas of research may include regional trade analysis, food security research, agricultural investment analysis, vulnerability assessments and risk analysis, and impact assessment.
2.    Supporting the development of a demand-driven knowledge management system, supported by a monitoring and evaluation system and an appropriate web-based platform to share data and analysis.
3.    Synthesis of studies and literature around topical issues affecting agriculture and rural development in the region to generate policy relevant messages.
4.    Communication and Representation: Participate in the communication of ReSAKSS’ work, e.g. through preparation of ReSAKSS publications such as working papers,  policy briefs, technical reports, journal publications, conference papers and presentations at policy conferences.

ILRI seeks to recruit a Senior Agricultural Economist and Team Leader to play a key role within the Market Opportunities Theme in leading ILRI’s evolving and expanding portfolio of research addressing smallholder livestock producer competitiveness and technology uptake.
The responsibilities of the position will include:
    Lead and manage a geographically dispersed international team of economists, social scientists, and livestock scientists addressing determinants of smallholder productivity and access to markets, inputs and knowledge services, and analyzing and testing options for increased productivity and welfare, across a range of countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, and Asia.
    Lead conceptual development of ILRI’s work on smallholder competitiveness in multiple crop-livestock systems, and support development of evidence for sustainable productivity interventions to guide appropriate livestock technology and policy development and investments.
    Build collaborations with relevant institutions and organizations internationally and nationally to conduct research and to advance project goals of improving smallholder competitiveness and sustained productivity.
    Support development projects led by NGOs and other development partners to ensure use of best practice productivity interventions, and to generate objective evidence from piloting those interventions.
    Develop proposals to raise resources to support new research addressing smallholder competitiveness in key crop-livestock value chains providing opportunity for addressing poverty and sustainability equitably.
Applicants should possess:
    A passion for the generation of scientific knowledge that advances pro-poor development;
    A Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics, Economics, or other Social Science with application to agriculture or rural development, with a minimum of 8 years of experience post-PhD;
    A proven research record reflecting experience in research design, quantitative and qualitative analytic methods and producing peer-reviewed outputs;
    Experience in managing a multi-disciplinary and multi-national team of researchers and development practitioners, and in the associated human resource and financial management;
    Demonstrated strong experience with analysis of smallholder household production and competitiveness,  technology uptake, access to markets and services;
    Understanding of outcome-oriented research design and implementation with pro-poor and gender oprientation, including communication and advocacy strategy development;
    Strong econometric and mathematical modeling skills, and the ability to apply them in pro-poor development research;
    Familiarity with aspects of livestock production, crop-livestock systems, and rural institutions and services in developing countries;
    Strong English language skills, both written and spoken (proficiency in other languages is an advantage);
    Willingness and ability to travel frequently, sometimes to rural areas in developing countries.
Post location: The position is based at ILRI’s Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.  Extensive travel to other countries and regions will be required.

The post doc will participate in the multi-centre Global Futures project which is coordinated by IFPRI.  The post doc will work closely with post docs at ILRI and CIMMYT who will also be based in Nairobi.  The ICRAF post doc will focus on enhancing modelling capability and empirical data to be able to assess the likely economic impacts of agroforestry and other natural resource management interventions.  The role includes the following responsibilities:
Develop methods for improving CGIAR modelling capability in agroforestry and other natural resource management intervention areas.  This may involve the direct enhancement of global models like IMPACT or the enhancement of other models that could be linked up (e.g. DSSAT).
Build up relevant global databases with which to undertake ex ante impact assessments for agroforestry and natural resource management interventions.
Collaborate with other ICRAF staff to identify priority ex ante impact assessments and to identify key model parameters, such as likely adoption trajectories and productivity, equity, income, and environmental service impacts.
Support increased use of ex ante impact assessment tools within ICRAF.
As with all scientists, generate and disseminate scientific publications

PHD in natural resources or environmental, agricultural, or development economics preferred
Work experience in modeling is an added an advantage
Experience in modelling of large scale or multi-country economic or natural resource management systems.
Use of GAMS programming and familiarity with important models used in the Global Futures project  – IMPACT, DREAM, DSSAT
Excellent data management skills and attention to detail
Good communication skills – writing, speaking, listening, discussing
Ability to work in a developing country and in a multicultural environment.

1. Undertaking analytical work based on regional priorities in agriculture and rural development. Areas of research may include regional trade analysis, food security research, agricultural investment analysis, vulnerability assessments and risk analysis, and impact assessment.
2. Supporting the development of a demand-driven knowledge management system, supported by a monitoring and evaluation system and an appropriate web-based platform to share data and analysis.
3. Synthesis of studies and literature around topical issues affecting agriculture and rural development in the region to generate policy relevant messages.

Preferred Skills:
