ILRI positions its work at the dynamic  interface of poverty alleviation <br /><a name='more'></a>and sustainable livestock livelihoods. Our  staff work in partnerships and alliances with organizations in developed and  developing countries, including some of the finest NGOs, universities and  research organizations in the world. ILRI’s headquarters are in Nairobi, Kenya,  with a second principal campus in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Our staff are also  based in 7 partner institutions in other parts of Africa and in Asia and Latin  America. We employ more than 700 staff from about 40 countries and are one of 15  centres sponsored by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural  Research (CGIAR).<br /><strong>The Position</strong><br />ILRI seeks to recruit a <strong>Barman/Waiter </strong>within the Housing,  Catering and Conferencing unit<strong> </strong>whose job purpose is to provide  food and beverage services to ILRI staff and other guests.<br /><strong>Responsibilities</strong>
<ul>
<li>Ensure the bar is adequately stocked at all times;</li>
<li>Ensure that there are no expired items are in the bar stock;</li>
<li>Perform and monitor the movement of stock at the bar;</li>
<li>Collect cash for items served and deposit with the cashier daily;</li>
<li>Promote beverage sales;</li>
<li>Ensure proper storage and care of operating equipment;</li>
<li>Ensure prompt service and clearance at the bar counter and bar surrounding  area;</li>
<li>Ensure a comprehensive handover is performed with all in-coming shift  staff;</li>
<li>Ensure general cleanliness in the bar area at all times.</li>
</ul>
<p>&nbsp;<strong>Requirements</strong>
<ul>
<li>Minimum Diploma in Food and Beverage services;</li>
<li>Minimum 2 years’ relevant experience;</li>
<li>Good computer skills in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook;</li>
<li>Good written and oral communication skills.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Terms of appointment</strong><br />This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi  campus and is open to Kenyan nationals only.&nbsp; The position is on a 2-year  renewable contract subject to satisfactory performance and availability of  funding.<br /><strong>Job level and salary </strong><br />This position is job Grade 1B, Level 2 with a starting gross salary of KES  34,000 per month. <ul>
<li>Supervise and coordinate the day to day activities in the cafeteria and the  bar and conferencing areas so as to deliver complete food&nbsp;and beverage services  to clients;</li>
<li>Compile on a daily, weekly and monthly basis all relevant food and beverage  information&nbsp;sales reports and submit to the Housing, Catering and Conferencing  Manager;</li>
<li>Work closely with the chef in the preparation of a variety of international  dishes;</li>
<li>Ensure that high standards of hygiene are maintained and that the necessary  periodical health and safety preventive measures are taken (pest control and  regular cleaning procedures, etc.) within the food service areas;</li>
<li>Submit a report on the monthly stocks&nbsp; used, income, utensils, crockery and  cutlery loss/breakage by the 10th of every month;</li>
<li>Submit a report on the number and types of functions held, the number of  guests served/covers in the cafeteria by the 10th of every month;</li>
<li>Supervise monthly stock take of the cutlery, linen, furniture, equipment and  bar stock.</li>

<li>Ensure there is efficient and proper filing and records documentation in the  Catering unit.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Requirements</strong>
<ul>
<li>Minimum Diploma in Food and Beverage Management;</li>
<li>Diploma in Food Production will be an added advantage;</li>
<li>Minimum 4 years’ experience in a similar position with a<strong>  </strong>reputable hotel or institution;</li>
<li>Experience in a leading busy catering (conferencing, bar and restaurant)  unit in a demanding environment;</li>
<li>Well developed computer skills in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel and  Outlook;</li>
<li>Good personal organization skills, accuracy and attention to detail  required;</li>
<li>Highly effective multi-tasking skills, with ability to coordinate,  prioritize, and organize work load, meet deadlines and work under pressure;</li>
<li>Capacity to take initiative, demonstrate good judgment and work under  minimal supervision;</li>
<li>Good written and oral communication skills.</li>
</ul>

ILRI positions its work at the dynamic interface of poverty alleviation and sustainable livestock livelihoods. Our staff works in partnerships and alliances with hundreds of organisations in developed and developing countries, including some of the finest universities and research institutions in the world. ILRI also managesBiosciences eastern and central Africa (BecA)-ILRI Hub, a new centre for excellence in modern plant and animal biology in Africa. It consists of a Hub based on the ILRI campus in Nairobi, Kenya and a network of regional nodes and other affiliated laboratories and organizations throughout the region.&nbsp; The BecA-ILRI Hub facilitates, hosts and conducts research in crop, microbe and livestock areas where new developments in science offer promise to address previously intractable problems constraining Africa’s development.&nbsp; Capacity building is a major goal of all activities. The scope covers agriculture and food security and their intersections with human health and nutrition, and the sustainable use of Africa’s natural resources.&nbsp; Further information is available at http://hub.africabiosciences.org/<br />The BecA-ILRI Hub seeks to recruit a Project Coordinator whose focus will be to manage and coordinate a new collaborative project between Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia, and the Biosciences eastern and central Africa – International Livestock Research Institute (BecA-ILRI) Hub. The Australian Government has announced its intention to provide generous support through CSIRO for a new Partnership with the BecA-ILRI Hub.&nbsp; The Partnership will support a program of biosciences research and development and related capacity building over four years (2010-2013).&nbsp; The overall goal is to improve food security by using the application of modern science to increase the productivity and sustainability of agricultural systems in Africa. We employ more than 700 staff from about 40 countries and are one of 15 centres around the world sponsored by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).<br />The position: ILRI seeks to recruit a research and policy analyst to join a small team of professionals working on the Regional Strategic Analysis and Knowledge Support System (ReSAKSS) program for Eastern and Central Africa (ECA). The objective of ReSAKSS is to provide analysis, data, and tools to promote evidence-based decision making, improve awareness of the role of agriculture for development in Africa, fill knowledge gaps, promote dialogue, and facilitate the implementation of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development and the African Union Commission and other regional agricultural development initiatives in Africa. The successful candidate will work with the ReSAKSS node based at ILRI-Nairobi which is set up to serve the COMESA region.<br /><strong>Specific duties will include:</strong>
<ol>
<li>Undertaking analytical work based on regional priorities in agriculture and rural development. Areas of research may include regional trade analysis, food security research, agricultural investment analysis, vulnerability assessments and risk analysis, and impact assessment.</li>
<li>Supporting the development of a demand-driven knowledge management system, supported by a monitoring and evaluation system and an appropriate web-based platform to share data and analysis.</li>
<li>Synthesis of studies and literature around topical issues affecting agriculture and rural development in the region to generate policy relevant messages.</li>
<li>Communication and Representation: Participate in the communication of ReSAKSS’ work, e.g. through preparation of ReSAKSS publications such as working papers, policy briefs, technical reports, journal publications, conference papers and presentations at policy conferences.</li>
<li>Contributing to the capacity building component of ReSAKSS including organizing and implementing policy relevant training for ReSAKSS’ stakeholders.</li>
<li>Contributing to the organization of conferences, seminars, and workshops organized or co-organized by ReSAKSS.</li>
</ol>
<p><strong>Preferred Skills: </strong>
<ul>
<li>A Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics, Economics or any other related field.</li>
<li> At least three years post-Ph.D. working experience in research and policy analysis in developing countries, preferably in Africa.</li>
<li> Familiarity with and deep understanding of agricultural and rural development issues in Africa, particularly in the COMESA region.</li>
<li> A good understanding of policy processes in the COMESA region.</li>
<li>Proven analytical and research skills through a track record of scientific publications.</li>
<li> Strong English language skills, both written and spoken, with a demonstrated record of publications in professional outlets. Knowledge of French will be an added advantage.</li>
<li> Ability and willingness to work in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams in a developing country setting. Experience with projects that bridge different approaches and disciplines will be an added advantage.</li>
<li> Experience in making presentations to large audiences at national and regional levels.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Other key qualifications: </strong>
<ul>
<li> Demonstrated ability to draft high-quality analytical and policy documents and related correspondence.</li>
<li> Ability to work under pressure, often to tight deadlines without compromising the quality of deliverables.</li>
<li> Demonstrated good organizational skills and ability to work with a minimum of supervision.</li>
<li> Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain professional contacts, and to interact with national officials and experts, other researchers, international organizations, development partners, and other ReSAKSS’ stakeholders.</li>
<li> A willingness to travel frequently within and outside the COMESA region.</li>
<li> Proven ability to mobilize resources.</li>
</ul>

<ul>
<li> Reconstitute Tissue culture media, Microbiological Plates, Buffers and specialised reagents used by all laboratories.</li>
<li> Replenishment of cold room with the required products from central core department used by all laboratories</li>
<li> Assemble simple and complex filtration equipments used in the production of sterile Media, buffers and other specialized reagents used in all laboratories</li>
<li> Be able to operate simple and complex machines like Washing machines, Autoclaves, ovens, Masterflex pumps used for dispensing Media, pH meter, Osmometer and incubators used for Quality control purposes,</li>
<li> Maintain Media preparation room clean and in an orderly condition, respecting Good Laboratory Practices and the Procedures in place.</li>
<li> Prepare, Autoclave, clean or dispose glassware and consumables used in laboratories</li>
<li>Management of stock consumables and glassware within the unit</li>
<li>Perform any other tasks related to the work done within the unit</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Preferred Skills Qualification:</strong>
<ul>
<li>High school certificate</li>
<li> Technical certificate in SLT or MLT</li>
<li> Proven skills and experience in laboratory techniques</li>
