About Girl Hub

Girl Hub’s mission is to empower the 250 million adolescent girls living in poverty to reach their full potential. Girls are a proven force for change and the catalyst to end global poverty — it’s called the Girl Effect.

When you improve girls’ lives through education, health, safety and economic opportunity, these changes have a positive ripple effect on their families, communities and nations. Our work aims to shift the social norms that hold girls back, and drive better investments that directly benefit girls. Everything we do is based on what girls tell us they need and what will work for them.

Girl Hub is a strategic collaboration between DFID and the Nike Foundation. We currently operate in Rwanda, Nigeria and Ethiopia with Headquarters in London. Girl Hub draws on the expertise of both DFID and the Nike Foundation to deliver results for girls.

About Girl Hub’s work in Ethiopia

The starting point for everything Girl Hub Ethiopia does is to understand what it means to be a girl in Ethiopia. Our research uses engaging and participatory approaches to better understand girls’ lives, aspirations and challenges. We work with policy makers, donors and partners in the private sector, who can deliver large-scale programmes and ensure girls are at the heart of the development agenda in Ethiopia.

About our branded media platform, Yegna

To shift perceptions and behaviour of girls in Ethiopia, Girl Hub has created an innovative youth media brand, Yegna. It consists of a radio drama, talk show and music platform that champion girls and create a national conversation about their potential. The radio drama and talk show address issues such as violence against girls, child marriage, teenage pregnancy and school attendance. Yegna uses female and male role models to shift attitudes and behaviours towards girls. Yegna music drives listeners to the radio drama and talk show. Every song aims to inspire girls and the lyrics send a message about their potential.
