Job Introduction

BBC Media Action uses media and communications to help improve health, reduce poverty, and support people in understanding their rights in the Global South. To achieve these objectives, BBC Media Action partners with civil society, local media and governments to:

  • Produce creative programmes in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences around key development issues; and
  • Strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure.

The work of BBC Media Action focuses on three thematic areas:

  • Humanitarian and emergency preparedness

Role Responsibility

This post sits within the Policy Team of BBC Media Action, which is responsible for representing the organisation’s work to external audiences, including donors, academic institutions, think tanks and institutional partners in relevant sectors both in person and online. In this job, you will work closely with the Senior Policy Manager and the Director of Policy and Insight to develop and coordinate the delivery of BBC Media Action’s external policy engagement strategy. You will coordinate the delivery of the policy elements of a five year Global Grant, including collaboration with international policy partners and engagement with developing country research institutions and think tanks. You will also work across the institution to aggregate policy perspectives and priorities of country, regional, thematic and research teams and ensure that policy outputs reflect and inform the experience, learning and perspectives of the organisation as a whole. This role will need you to manage key relationships within the media and development sector, including partnership and strategies with sector partners. You will also help to organise conferences, seminars and other events, manage a budget, make presentations and write and edit blogs.

The Ideal Candidate

This role requires you to have inconsiderable substantive knowledge of international development – ideally, within the subfield of media development/communication for development – combined with clear experience of engaging policy audiences on the core thematic issues of most concern to Media Action. You will additionally be an excellent writer, outstanding communicator and be highly conversant and comfortable using social media as a tool for engagement.  This position also requires the ability to work in a team, experience of writing for the web and the clear and proven capacity to manage budgets.
