Communications Manager at BBC Media Action

We are seeking a talented, experienced, and creative senior communications professional to play a key leadership role at BBC Media Action, the BBC’s international development charity. Heading the Communications Team in London and reporting to the Director of Strategy and Partnerships, she/he will lead an interdisciplinary team responsible for all corporate communications – including content creation, events, media and PR.

The Communications Team promotes the value and impact of this work to a range of key audiences through both traditional and digital channels.

Role Responsibility

  • To deliver BBC Media Action’s Communications Strategy from planning to implementation. This involves setting objectives, generating and analysing audience insight, managing the engagement of internal stakeholders, ensuring successful prioritisation and delivery of communications activities throughout the year, and evaluating their effectiveness.
  • To lead a small, multi-disciplinary communications team and be responsible for workflow, team management and team budget.
  • To manage the team to effectively design and deliver targeted and high impact communication campaigns to promote the work and impact of BBC Media Action.
  • To oversee all corporate communications editorial outputs including online, print and video with editorial responsibility for signing off content, consulting with senior/specialist staff as required.
  • To lead on all media enquiries, issue management and defensive communication responses whilst also proactively engaging with relevant press.
  • To provide the Chief Executive Director and other senior staff with an authoritative source of strategic and tactical advice on all aspects of Communications whenever necessary (including out of hours).
  • To manage close communication relationships with key media and communications stakeholders across the BBC and specifically across the international development sector.

Are you the right candidate?

  • A talented senior, creative communications professional with experience of leading an interdisciplinary communications teams across content creation, digital and social media, media and PR, stakeholder engagement and events.
  • Experience of devising and implementing strategic communications plans, including in setting objectives, driving and monitoring activities and measuring successes.
  • A sound track record in delivering communications campaigns, a good news sense and the ability to quickly familiarise oneself with the opportunities and risks associated with BBC Media Action’s work, profile and position in the international development sector.
  • Senior experience in handling media enquiries, issue management and crisis communication responses.
  • Experience of managing external agencies and/or suppliers

You are eligible to apply for an internal role if you are either on a BBC Continuing (Permanent) contract, a BBC Fixed Term contract, a casual contract or freelance contract and you have worked continuously for 6 months.
