Senior Project Manager, BBC Media Action-Sierra Leone

Job Introduction

BBC Media Action uses media and communication to help people improve their lives and support them to understand their rights. We do this through partnering with civil society, media and others to produce creative programmes and other outputs which inform and engage audiences on key development issues. We also strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure. We focus on health, governance and rights, and resilience and humanitarian response.

Role Responsibility

  • Project management. The role involves overall responsibility for delivering behaviour change communication (BCC) projects at national scale. Experience of working on relevant media projects in either girls’ education, health, and/or accountability sectors will be a significant asset.
  • Member of the Senior Management Team in the country office. Requires acting as Country Director for short periods of annual leave, etc.
  • Communication and reporting skills. This role involves communicating effectively with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders, including government agencies, INGOs and NGOs, media house managers, and UK based staff supporting the implementation of country projects. The role also involves reporting on project implementation and financial expenditure to international donors.
  • Editorial judgement and knowledge of BBC editorial processes. The role requires a good understanding of media content production on radio, tv, and mobile platforms, and involves responsibility for ensuring compliance with risk assessments, health and safety, editorial referrals, and child protection.
  • Recruiting and leading teams. The role involves identifying and recruiting suitable talented individuals, developing and leading teams of national staff with a wide range of skills, abilities, experiences, and backgrounds.
  • Financial management. This role involves working on a range of different financial responsibilities, including procurement of goods and services, accurate forecasting of project budgets, reviewing of project finance reports, liaison with the finance team in UK, and possibly serving as a bank signatory on office bank accounts.

Are you the right candidate?

  • Considerable experience developing and managing complex projects in the international development sector.
  • Demonstrable understanding and commitment to international development, including the use of media for developmental goals.
  • Significant experience in the effective management of diverse teams, including personnel development and capability management.
  • Strong financial management skills, including experience of managing large budgets and knowledge of the reporting requirements of donors.
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiating and diplomatic skills.
  • Proven ability to develop new business ideas, present these persuasively to potential donors and partners, and write successful donor-funded proposals.
