DFID Nigeria: HEAD OF NORTHERN OFFICE

DFID Nigeria (DFIDN) is responsible for managing the British Government’s contribution to development in Nigeria, with the objective of supporting governments at federal and state level to reduce poverty in order to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Appointments will be under local terms and conditions and are subject to security clearance.

HEAD OF NORTHERN OFFICE, KANO

The post holder will represent DFID, lead policy dialogue, build relationships with key states in the north, ensure effective programme coordination of DFID’s work in Northern Nigeria as well as shape the strategy and delivery of UK aid within Nigeria.

Key Responsibilities

Maintain effective overall management of the DFID Northern Office, ensuring effective implementation of the DFID systems, policies and procedures.
Ensure regular and effective external communications of the work of DFID funded programmes in Northern Nigeria.
Support Advocacy and political dialogue as part of visiting high level DFID/FCO missions
Interact with senior officials whilst supporting Human Development programmes in the north such as PRINN-MNCH, GEP Malarial, and Water and Sanitation Programmes.
Ensure effective partnership/ bilateral cooperation with state partners, support and maintain good relationship Governor’s offices and key development actors in the states.
Deepen dialogue and consultation with SLP’s in Lead state, supporting coordinated implementation
Work cooperatively with the UK FCO promoting regional advocacy and supporting development opportunities as part of collective UK government presence in Nigeria.

You will have the following technical competencies:

A postgraduate qualification or equivalent from an internationally recognized programme
A minimum of 4 years experience and demonstration of a successful track record of achievement as a development professional
A wide knowledge of development challenges in Nigeria, practical experience of aid delivery in the north, a deep understanding of the political economy and good appreciation of the social and cultural sensitivities
You will demonstrate the following behavioural competencies:

Leading and managing: Team leadership and management experience crucial Representational and diplomatic skills are essential in providing leadership, and effectively dealing with key government officials at the highest level of policy in different states.
Working with others; Temperament and sensitively to work in a multidisciplinary team, providing leadership and support
Influencing Engaging effectively with a wide range of stakeholders with complex agendas including contractors, other donors, senior officials, politicians, religious and traditional leaders.
Analyst and used of Informal; Mastery of a great deal of complex material, news, data, information, and process and communicate these effectively for use within the office feeding into DFID North management team to inform strategy
Planning and delivery of work: Need to ensure datelines to tasks are met and different members of your team are motivated to meet corporate requirements.
The ability to demonstrate the capacity for team leadership, management and administrative skills in addition to capacity to lead a multi-cultural team.
