The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works at the crossroads of livestock and poverty, bringing high-quality livestock science, communications and capacity building to bear on poverty reduction and sustainable development. ILRI is one of 15 centres supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). ILRI has campuses in Kenya (headquarters) and Ethiopia, with other offices located in other regions of Africa (Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria) as well as in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka), Southeast Asia (Laos, Thailand, Vietnam) and East Asia (China).

ILRI also manages the Biosciences eastern and central Africa (BecA) Hub, a new centre for excellence in modern plant and animal biology in Africa. BecA is an initiative developed within the framework of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD)/ African Union African Biosciences initiative. It consists of a Hub based on the ILRI campus in Nairobi, Kenya and a network of regional nodes and other affiliated laboratories and organizations throughout the region. The BecA Hub seeks to recruit a Research Technician to provide support to a team conducting genetic diversity studies for breeding strategies using molecular markers. This position is a two year term appointment with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding, and is based at ILRI’s Headquarters in Nairobi.

Key responsibilities

Conducting research using molecular tools
Establishing and curating of databases containing overall project data
Genotyping and sequence analysis

Job Purpose

To identify mycoplasma components targeted by the primary (IgM) antibody response (a proxy for early infection) and to develop a prototype slide agglutination assay based on these antigens for evaluation as a point-of-care diagnostic. The candidate will be responsible for purifying recombinant mycoplasma proteins and testing them in ELISA and latex agglutination assays for specificity and sensitivity.

Responsibilities

Culture and quantify mycoplasma in vitro
Synthesize and purify recombinant mycoplasma proteins
Evaluate antibody responses from vaccinated and infected cattle against recombinant protein
Develop a prototype slide agglutination assay

Requirements

Master of Science degree in a biosciences field
Have good practical skills in basic molecular biology and microbiology techniques.
Experience with synthesis and secretion of recombinant proteins, as well as with enzyme assays

The position: ILRI seeks to recruit a scientist to join a new multidisciplinary project on peri-urban dairy systems in Mali. The project aims to characterise the performance of different dairy breed types (indigenous pure-breeds as well as indigenous by exotic cross-breeds) by obtaining data at different levels (community, farm and animal), with the monitoring of the dairy animals occurring over an 18 month period. The project will also investigate aspects of the dairy value-chain related to germplasm delivery. This scientist will design data collection instruments and coordinate data collection in two sites in Mali (one located in peri-urban Bamako, the other located some distance from Bamako), as well as run various workshops including farmer feed-back sessions. She/he will also be responsible for analyzing the field data. She/he would also play a key role in developing and sustaining the partnerships and communication activities needed to ensure that the project is conducted smoothly and achieves its objective. She / he will work in close collaboration with other project members in a multidisciplinary team.

Location: ILRI, Bamako, Mali, with frequent travel within Malia and to the ILRI headquarters in Kenya.

The successful candidate will have:

A Ph.D. in Livestock Production, Animal Production, Animal Breeding, or related field with application to agriculture
Experience with primary data collection and survey design in developing countries, specifically in livestock systems
Strong capabilities in quantitative analysis
Experience of working in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams, in a developing country setting

This PhD project aims to apply synthetic biology tools to identify and characterise Mycoplasma mycoides molecules and evaluate their function in virulence as well as for their suitability for vaccine development. The project will be carried in close collaboration with scientists at the J Craig Venter institute in Rockville, USA and INRA in Bordeaux, France.

Specifically, the successful applicant will be expected to:

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), New Delhi as part of its new programme on “Enhancing Livelihoods through Livestock Knowledge Systems” (ELKS), funded by Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust (NRTT), an allied Trust of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT) seeks to recruit a Senior Technical Officer (STO) to work in Jharkhand. The STO is expected to provide technical support on applied livestock research and development, particularly in goat and pig production and marketing for improvement in rural livelihoods of underprivileged communities. S/he will also assist data collection and support ILRI scientists in the analysis and preparation of reports, articles, and presentations.

The post holder will formally report to the Senior Programme Manager (ELKS), ILRI, New Delhi and will work very closely with the Trusts’ initiative in Jharkhand (CInI-Collectives for Integrated Livelihood Initiatives). In addition the post holder will support CInI in their livestock based programmes based on demand. Broad areas of support in Jharkhand include:

Goat and pig value chain analysis

Development of sustainable models for pig and goat production and marketing by smallholder tribal communities and provide handholding support for scaling out of successful models by partner organizations

Identification of policy and institutional bottlenecks and gaps in pro-poor livestock development and policy facilitation to upscale tested models

Required Skills and experience

Sound understanding of livestock systems in India and their role in rural livelihoods, particularly in underprivileged communities and groups.

Responsibilities

Synthesis of studies and literature around topical issues affecting agriculture and rural development in the region to generate policy relevant messages.

Contributing to the capacity building component of ReSAKSS including organizing and implementing policy relevant training for ReSAKSS’ stakeholders.

A Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics or Economics with emphasis on agricultural trade and poverty analysis.

A good understanding of policy processes in the COMESA region.

Proven analytical and research skills through a track record of scientific publications.

Strong English language skills, both written and spoken, with a demonstrated track record of publications in professional outlets. Knowledge of French will be an added advantage.

Ability and willingness to work in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams in a developing country setting. Experience with projects that bridge different approaches and disciplines will be an added advantage.

Experience in making presentations to large audiences at national and regional levels.
