ActionAids: Senior Programme Manager on Education and Youth

13 million of the world’s poorest and excluded people in over 40
countries worldwide to secure their rights to a life free of poverty and
injustice, and with the support of half a million donors and supporters.
Senior Programme Manager on Education and Youth
Location: preferably: Johannesburg, South Africa: or one of AAI’s hubs (Bangkok, Rio de Janeiro, Dakar, Nairobi, London)
Salary: GB£45,489 per annum
You will provide strategic leadership for the development and design of high-impact rights-based programming on education and
youth work in line with our new People’s Action global strategy. You will work to improve the quality of public education for all,
ensuring schools respect rights and promoting system-wide reforms – as well as helping to mobilise 5 million youth to take action
to end poverty. You will ensure a strong external-facing engagement in key international forums. You will convene one or more
agency wide project team/s that will deliver coordinated multi-country programmes linking local, national and international work
and generating innovative alternatives to conventional approaches. You will establish ActionAid as one of the leading NGOs
globally on education and youth work and attract significant funding to further scale up work in these areas.
Candidate Specification
The ideal candidate will have the relevant postgraduate degree, coupled with the following:
• At least 10 years experience in leadership roles managing people and budgets on education and youth issues, of which at
least 5 years should be international experience.
• Comprehensive understanding of rights-based approaches to education and youth programming, and ways of linking
programme practice to policy and campaigning work.
• Strategic thinker and innovator, able to spot trends and opportunities before others and translate these into practical
interventions
• Experience in international programme design, project cycle, development & implementation
• Excellent advocacy and networking skills and connections at international or regional level for advancing AAI’s influencing
agenda and public profile on education and youth issues
• Dynamic, participatory leadership style with superb negotiating and influencing skills, with proven ability to negotiate
among stakeholders with strongly diverging interests to get results without line management authority
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills in English, ability to persuade and motivate through communication
• Able to manage others (often from a distance) to meet tight deadlines and multiple priorities; able to build and inspire
high-performing multi-cultural teams
• Successful track record of fundraising, including for influencing work as well as operational work
• A strong commitment to develop, promote and practice AAI’s vision, mission, values, and strategy
• Women’s rights understanding, analysis and commitment
• Knowledge of French, Spanish and Portuguese will be advantageous
