Job purpose and key deliverables

Job Purpose:

The overall objective of the role of Area Head of Audit is to influence Senior Management to review that an appropriate balance exists between risks and associated controls. The Area Head of Audit is required to participate in key audit areas of the business, often dictated by risks emerging from organisational changes. These will include a number of global holistic audits, reviewing a process across the entire organization and. Although the Area Head of Audit is primarily responsible for East & Central Africa Area, some of his/her responsibilities expand outside the Area such as provision of assurance/audit services to the Eastern Europe Middle East Africa Region.

Key Deliverables:

1. Execute and supervise the audit plan within East & Central Africa Area through ensuring that all audits are adequately scheduled, resourced and conducted in line with the Business Audit Methodology (BAM) with regards to planning, fieldwork and reporting. A follow up using the available tools (TeamMate) is mandated whilst ensuring that there is adequate and timely involvement of specialists

2. Participate in ensuring that a strong control environment is maintained across the East & Central Africa Area  through:-

a) Building of internal control awareness across the Area by conducting Internal Control Awareness training programmes (Are You In Control Training)

b) Assist management in the tracking and follow up of agreed action points from the Control Navigators, Audit Memoranda, Immediately Reportable Incidents and external audit agreed action points so as to ensure timely and complete implementation.

c) Advisory role on best practice on internal control matters while ensuring that Internal Audit’s independence is maintained (value addition).

d) Liaison with other functions so as to embed a proactive approach in identification of risk areas / internal control gaps in processes across the Area.

3. Secretary to the BAT Kenya Limited and BAT Uganda Limited (both listed companies) Local and Area Audit & Corporate Social Responsibility Committees charged with various  responsibilities

4. Coordination, preparation and submission of Area inputs into the Eastern Europe Middle East Africa Regional Commercial & Operations Audits & Corporate Social Responsibility

5. Participate in the development of the Eastern Europe Middle East Africa  Regional audit plan, taking into account the Global/ Regional risks as well as the Area/ end market

6. Support the Audit Leadership Team, review and revise as necessary, the audit vision, imperatives and deliverables in line with finance, global strategies and organization of the Group. Implement this revised strategy in the various areas.

7. Build internal and external networks for the function through meeting with audit managers in other FMCGs and heads of function to facilitate benchmarking and enhancement of the audit function’s business partnership agenda.

Essential requirements Education:
1. A graduate in a relevant degree
2. Certified Post Graduate Accounting Qualification is mandatory
3. Good understanding of International Financial Reporting Standards and superior analytical skills are required for the job to ensure effective reviews and delivery of audit work.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

1. Sound commercial knowledge – A qualified Accountant with at least 6-8years work experience in an FMCG environment or a global corporate company with the last two having involved interaction with and reporting to senior management. Sound cross functional knowledge is required to ensure that advice given has taken into account the business context of the matter.
 
2. Superior communication skills – clear and concise to enhance management’s decision making and promote staff development through acting on feedback. The role also entails review and issue of audit reports to senior management in the Area, Region and Group which should be of high standards to pass across the intended message.
 
3. Engagement skills – the role requires interacting/advising board members, general manager, functional heads and senior functional management. The incumbent is expected to participate in various leadership meetings hence the need for an individual who can engage and inspire senior management and is confident in their own abilitity

4. Leadership & People management skills – A candidate with at least 2 years’ experience in managing a team based in various localities. The role requires a lot of support for staff (direct reports) through coaching, training and developing them into competent future managers

5. A good understanding of the use and application of IT and a thorough knowledge of the related control and security standards.

6. Negotiating skills to manage General Managers’, functional heads’ & senior managements’ expectations in reaching consensus and agreeing reports.

Desirable requirements

•    The incumbent will be required to travel for extended periods of time outside of the base station - Nairobi
