BBC Media Action

BBC Media Action uses media and communications to reduce poverty and promote human rights in developing countries and fractured states. To achieve this, it partners with civil society, local media and governments to:

  • Produce creative programmes in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences around key development issues;
  • Strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure.

BBC Media Action promotes development and human rights through three main thematic areas of health, governance and rights, and humanitarian and emergency preparedness.

BBC Media Action in Libya

Since the end of 2011, just months after the fall of the Gaddafi regime, BBC Media Action has been working in Libya to develop programming that will improve Libyans’ access to information, and encourage debate and participation in the country’s transition. The current extensive fighting across the country has meant that BBC Media Action has relocated its operations to Tunis for an interim period.

Purpose of the Job

To lead on innovative and engaging ways of reaching audiences on Facebook, Twitter and other social media channels for BBC Media Action’s projects in Libya.

The post holder will seek to make sure that our projects reach the right audiences and will help boost engagement with our content/programming.  They will also work to the BBC’s social media editorial guidelines and will help train staff, trainees and civil society organisations (CSOs) on social media skills.  They will be tasked by project managers and the country director but will be expected to be proactive in developing, implementing and monitoring social media strategies.

The post is based in Tunis, where BBC Media Action’s Libya operations are temporarily based.

Duties

  1. Develops the strategy for, and manages, the delivery of engaging and thoughtful social media campaigns under the direction of the senior project management team and country director;
  2. Helps ensure that BBC editorial values and guidelines for social media are upheld on Libya projects;
  3. Maintains and develops existing platforms to maximise reach including Twitter, Apps, Instagram and Facebook;
  4. Develops graphic look and feel of social media platforms in consultation with country director and Libya projects’ production teams;
  5. Looks for new social media trends and recommends how learnings can be applied to  BBC Media Action Libya projects;
  6. Monitors the social media budget under the direction of the senior project management team and country director;
  7. Coordinates social media training for staff, trainees and CSOs;
  8. Works with the CSO coordinator to integrate CSOs into the social media strategy and to support CSOs and CSO networks in developing engaging social media campaigns;
  9. Organises live social media interactions at BBC Media Action events and filming;
  10. Coordinates promotion of BBC Media Action events and activities in social media under the direction of the senior project management team and country director;
  11. Works with BBC Media Action’s Research & Learning team to develop insightful social media research;
  12. Monitors reach of, and engagement with, social media and recommends ways to increase impact;
  13. Produces weekly social media reports for senior project management team and country director;
  14. Supports report writing on social media activity for project funders and other external audiences – working with project management and Research & Learning teams;
  15. Participates in information and knowledge sharing with other teams across BBC Media Action including the Editorial Development Team
  16. Ad hoc English/Arabic translation tasks as required.

Essential skills and experience

  • Excellent social media skills;
  • Excellent knowledge of the Libyan social media landscape;
  • Experience of developing and implementing highly successful social media campaigns;
  • Experience in either media or international development (with experience in the latter being desirable)
  • Interest in learning about new trends in social media and communicating how insights can be applied to BBC Media Action projects in Libya;
  • Ability to analyse social media data and direct strategy according to insights;
  • Excellent relationship building and interpersonal skills;
  • Strong communication skills including the ability to write well in English;
  • English and Arabic fluency;
  • Excellent attention to detail.
