British American Tobacco South Africa Recruits Laboratory Manager

 Job purpose and key deliverables  
Providing analytical support by performing routine and non-routine analyses on Finished Products, Semi-finished products, in-process components, raw materials and packaging materials.
Liaising with stakeholders to ensure that all analytical requirements are satisfied.
Managing the ISO 17025 accreditation process.
Creating an environment with optimum resource allocation to ensure that the personnel are aware of and are motivated to achieve the quality objectives.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES  

• Providing people leadership by creating an environment that motivates the personnel to ensure that all analytical and technical requirements are fulfilled.
• Ensuring all laboratory personnel are trained with respect to equipment handling, calibration, and maintenance – for all analytical methods. Performing and assessing training needs to ensure a multi-skilled analytical team.
• Allocate and manage the available resources to ensure that all stakeholder requirements are fulfilled.
• Supervise analytical activities to ensure all work is performed to the required standard and satisfies the requirements of the Business Management System.
• Ensuring that analytical results are accurate  and managing reporting dates according to agreed timelines with stakeholders.
• Providing trouble-shooting and problem solving expertise to resolve non-conformances and customer complaints by implementing corrective and preventive actions.
• Maintaining and improving the Business Management System manual and ensuring that any departures identified are corrected.
• Ensuring that the Laboratory satisfies all the specified requirements detailed in the ISO 17025 standard and maintaining the accreditation to this standard.
• Being the ISO representative for the factory and the laboratory.
• Managing the PI&T, Internal Audit and the Customer Complaints programs for the factory and the laboratory.
• Being responsible for the compiling of the Annual Management Review program for the Factory and Laboratory.
• Managing the customer feedback process for the laboratory.
• Attend meetings for Quality Improvement Forums and PDT for SAA.
• Managing the EHS program for the laboratory and ensuring that the Laboratory complies with the BAT EHS requirements and all applicable regulations.
• Managing all chemical MSDS and stock levels based on both legal and analytical requirements

Essential requirements

• Matric / Grade 12
• Honours Degree in Biochemistry/ Chemical engineering or equivalent
• Up to ten years relevant experience in an analytical laboratory, preferably in an ISO 17025 environment and minimum of five years in a laboratory people management position.
• Extensive knowledge of chemical testing methods, processes, equipment and chemicals.
• In-depth knowledge of ISO 17025 and implementation to a management representative level.
• Working knowledge of Statistical Process Control and laboratory software.
• Exhibit leadership skills to lead a diverse team by coaching, mentoring, motivating and effective resource management.
• Good interpersonal skills and customer centric.
• Good communication in technical and business environment – adequate English verbal and written skills and comfortable with presentations to diverse stakeholder groups.
• Strong analytical problem solving skills and decision making ability.
• Ability to perform internal audits and manage internal auditors.
• Excellent organisation skills
• Excellent attention to detail and accuracy of work
• Proficient in Microsoft packages and laboratory software
• Able to impart technical knowledge
• Able to work under pressure
