Background / General description:
The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, is a
global investor and advisor committed to promoting projects in its developing member countries that are economically beneficial, financially and commercially sound, and environmentally and socially sustainable. IFC finances private sector investments, mobilizes capital in the international financial markets, helps clients improve social and environmental sustainability, and provides technical assistance and advice to governments and businesses in the developing world. To support its growing investment activities, IFC s Global Financial Markets Department (CGF) invites applicants to apply for an Associate/Investment Officer position in its MENA region. The Associate/Investment Officer s responsibilities will include origination and support of new transactions, as well as supervision of an assigned portfolio of projects in the CGF cluster.
Duties and Accountabilities:
Developing a thorough understanding of the financial markets sector including commercial banks, leasing companies, microfinance banks etc. and establish in-depth relationships with key regional and local market players.
Evaluating the early attractiveness of specific transactions and making recommendations for IFC s investments.
Participating in teams for due diligence of companies/projects for potential financing, with a strong focus on credit and asset quality. This would include processing mandates, structuring deals and negotiating term sheets and other documentation, syndications and internal approvals, as well as supervision thereafter.
Participating in negotiations with the borrowers, sponsors, co-lenders, etc.
Managing IFC s relationship with various stakeholders in assigned portfolio companies in terms of: Portfolio execution; reviewing, analyzing and monitoring financial and operating performance of clients, and compliance (IFC and external), through visits to these clients and analysis of reports they submit; Handling disbursements, waivers and other client requests; Actively monitoring the equities in the portfolio and making recommendations to senior management regarding the sale of holdings, valuations and subscription to rights issues; Monitoring and ensuring the companies compliance with the terms of investment agreements, and preparing timely internal supervision reports; Proactively identifying problem projects, negotiating straightforward restructurings and making well substantiated loss reserves recommendations. Keeping abreast of sector developments in the countries where portfolio clients are located and identifying and analyzing strengths and weaknesses of clients in order to anticipate near and long term performance and escalate issues to senior management as needed; Tracking and taking the lead in managing sensitive environmental and social issues that may arise in assigned projects, and championing IFC s technical assistance and sustainability offerings to clients; and Tracking and recording the development impacts of assigned projects.
Selection Criteria:
MBA or equivalent degree with specialization in Finance.
Strong analytical and conceptual skills encompassing finance and the allied areas of financial investment, corporate finance and economics.
At least five years of relevant experience in finance, e.g. corporate banking or project finance, investment banking, credit ratings or equity research/analysis experience.
Experience of working with financial institutions in the region or in other emerging markets.
Ability to multi task, deal with conflicting priorities and deliver high quality work on schedule.
Sound business judgment and strong problem solving, negotiation and commercial skills.
Excellent organizational, administrative, and time management skills with proven ability to work promptly and efficiently under pressure and meet tight deadlines;
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with people at all levels (inside and outside IFC) with demonstrated team spirit and responsiveness.
Ability to work in large, culturally diverse and geographically dispersed teams.
Languages: English and Arabic are essential
