We employ more than 700 staff from about 40 countries and are one of 15 centres around the world sponsored by the Consultative Group of International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
ILRI seeks to recruit 2 Post doctoral fellows to work in a project to develop small ruminant value chains in dryland areas of India and Mozambique, as platforms for reducing poverty and increasing food security, with a specific focus on women and other marginalized groups. The persons appointed will be required to have a Ph D in social sciences/economics with experience working in livestock systems or; livestock science with exposure to social sciences/economics and preferably an understanding of innovation systems and value chain analysis.
Key Responsibilities:
a) Contribute to design and implementation of research, working with national research and development partners to develop sustainable and replicable organizational and technical models to strengthen small ruminant value chains through enhancing innovation capacity and enabling conditions
b) Applying existing and new conceptual frameworks on value chains and innovation to enhance our understanding of how innovation in value chains can be stimulated and sustained in ways that bring improvements in the well-being of livestock-dependent poor households and women
c) Monitoring and documentation of processes, mechanisms and tracking changes associated with research activities to develop evidence-based goat value chain development models
d) Provide strategic guidance to R&D partners in experimentation, action research and monitoring and evaluation activities that enhance understanding and learning from the experiences in the project
e) Contribute to the formation and management of strategic research and development partnerships and communication activities with local, national and international partners needed to ensure that the project is conducted smoothly and achieves its objectives
f) Contribute to preparation of research reports, briefs, and other strategic communication products including research materials for website content and publication
Requirements:
- Ph.D. in Livestock systems; Economics; Agricultural or Development Economics; Innovation Systems Studies;Rural Development & Innovation; or a relevant discipline in the social sciences related to innovation systems and value chains in developing countries
- Experience with supervising/co-ordinating collection and analysis of data related to agricultural value chainsand/or innovation systems and practical application of the principles at international and/or local levels
- Experience with livestock and gender issues
- Strong conceptual skills and familiarity with qualitative and quantitative research methods and analysis
- Excellent facilitation, interpersonal and networking skills
- Demonstrated ability to work in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams, in a developing country setting
- Strong oral and written communication skills, with a demonstrated record of publications
- Strong English language skills, both written and spoken. For the position to be based in Mozambique, proficiency in Portuguese is desirable.
- Experience of working in India or Southern Africa would be an advantage
- Willingness to travel frequently
- A sense of creativity and ability to work with minimal supervision
Post location: One position will be based in Delhi (India) and one in Vilanculos (Mozambique), with travel to field sites in both countries and ILRI offices in Nairobi and Addis Ababa.
Terms of appointment: The above is an internationally-recruited fixed term appointment for two years. ILRI offers a competitive international remuneration package paid in US dollars including pension, allowances for education, housing and security, and full medical coverage.
