Capacity building is a major goal of all activities. The scope covers agriculture and food security and their intersections with human health and nutrition, and the sustainable use of Africa’s natural resources. The BecA-ILRI Hub seeks to recruit a Project Coordinator whose focus will be to manage and coordinate a new collaborative project between Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia, and the Biosciences eastern and central Africa – International Livestock Research Institute (BecA-ILRI) Hub. The Australian Government has announced its intention to provide generous support through CSIRO for a new Partnership with the BecA-ILRI Hub. The Partnership will support a program of biosciences research and development and related capacity building over four years (2010-2013). The overall goal is to improve food security by using the application of modern science to increase the productivity and sustainability of agricultural systems in Africa. This is an international appointment reporting to the BecA-ILRI Hub Director. The position will have appropriate support staff.
Job Purpose
The Project Coordinator will be expected to manage allocation of project resources and connect the project team to each other and to key stakeholders.
Key responsibilities
Facilitate communication and liaison at individual and institutional level
Create, implement, monitor and revise work plans and timelines for project activities, ensuring appropriate allocation of resources and potential issues are identified and addressed
Coordinate internal operations on behalf of the project team
Manage project accounts; expenditure, funds transfer and financial reporting
Support BecA-ILRI Hub Director on administrative issues.
Requirements
Ph.D. degree in biological sciences (e.g. molecular biology, plant breeding, human nutrition or animal health)

ILRI seeks to recruit a postdoctoral scientist within its Poverty and Gender Group. The goal of the position will be to conduct and publish research on gender and assets including livestock and develop strategies for integrating gender and gender analysis in ILRI’s projects and programmes.
Key responsibilities
• Contribute to design, implementation and reporting of research on gender and livestock
• Analyze the contribution of agriculture development projects to increasing women’s assets including livestock assets
• Contribute to the development and testing of poverty, gender and equity indicators for monitoring and evaluating livestock research and development projects
• Contribute to the formation and strengthening of strategic partnerships with organizations working on gender and livestock
• Provide strategic guidance to other ILRI scientists, research and development partners on integrating gender in their projects including in monitoring and evaluation and in the collection and analysis of genderdisaggregated data
• Contribute to preparation of peer-reviewed articles, research reports, briefs, and other strategic communication products including gender checklists and research materials for website content and publication
• Contribute to resource mobilization and fund raising efforts
• Co-Supervise students doing their research on gender and livestock
Requirements
• A PhD obtained not more than 5 years ago in gender and development studies, rural development, sociology or other relevant social science or agriculture discipline.
• A good theoretical and practical understanding of gender and development issues and specifically gender, agriculture and livestock.
• Demonstrated skills in qualitative data collection and analysis. Knowledge and experience with quantitative skills will be an added advantage.
• Ability to work in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams in developing countries.
• Understanding of M&E approaches especially more progressive approaches to monitoring and learning and experience in collection of primary data and survey design
• Good publications record with strong written and oral communication skills in English.
• Good organizational skills and experience with or willingness to learn project management skills

The Research Technician will be attached to the East Africa Dairy Development Project, a project led by Heifer International and implemented in partnership with ILRI, TNS, ABS-TCM and the World Agro Forestry.
Key responsibilities
Contribute to the design and implementation of agro-economic field studies, in collaboration with other project staff (ILRI and other project institutions)
Undertake data analyses and assist with developing appropriate technical, policy and institutional solutions at the farm and market levels to improve smallholder dairy farmers’ competitiveness and access to remunerative and reliable markets at the project sites
Provide support in report writing and dissemination of results to project partners and other stakeholders

Requirements
A minimum of a Masters degree in Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness sposor related field, and at least 2 years of experience working in a research for development environment

Demonstrated skills and experience in quantitative economics including competence in data handling and analysis using standard and statistical softwares (specifically Stata, SPSS or SAS).

ILRI seeks to recruit a Veterinary Epidemiologist as part of the ILRI Research Theme on Livestock Market Opportunities. The emphasis of this position is on risk analysis for food safety in livestock product markets, particularly in the informal and traditional market systems that are important for small holder producers in Africa and Asia. The epidemiologist would work within a multi-disciplinary team that includes market economists, and institutional and social scientists on projects with a strong action research orientation, including piloting of innovative strategies to reduce food safety and animal disease transmission risks within livestock supply chains. Project areas include multiple counties in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.
The responsibilities of this position will include the following:
Conduct hazard and risk assessments within livestock product supply chains related to both animal disease transmission and food safety risks from zoonotic diseases.
Play the lead technical support role to action research projects that explore innovative market-led technical and institution strategies for risk management and communication in livestock product markets, and other projects with a food safety or risk assessment element
Lead or support the development of proposals for food safety in livestock product markets and value chains, for domestic and export
Applicants should possess:
PhD in Epidemiology, Microbiology, Public Health, Food Safety or a related subject
At least two years post-PhD experience working on food-borne disease or zoonoses research in developing countries

The position: ILRI seeks to recruit a research and policy analyst to join a small team of professionals working on the Regional Strategic Analysis and Knowledge Support System (ReSAKSS) program for Eastern and Central Africa (ECA). The objective of ReSAKSS is to provide analysis, data, and tools to promote evidence-based decision making, improve awareness of the role of agriculture for development in Africa, fill knowledge gaps, promote dialogue, and facilitate the implementation of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development and the African Union Commission and other regional agricultural development initiatives in Africa. The successful candidate will work with the ReSAKSS node based at ILRI-Nairobi which is set up to serve the COMESA region.
Specific duties will include:
1. Undertaking analytical work based on regional priorities in agriculture and rural development. Areas of research may include regional trade analysis, food security research, agricultural investment analysis, vulnerability assessments and risk analysis, and impact assessment.
2. Supporting the development of a demand-driven knowledge management system, supported by a monitoring and evaluation system and an appropriate web-based platform to share data and analysis.
3. Synthesis of studies and literature around topical issues affecting agriculture and rural development in the region to generate policy relevant messages.
4. Communication and Representation: Participate in the communication of ReSAKSS’ work, e.g. through preparation of ReSAKSS publications such as working papers, policy briefs, technical reports, journal publications, conference papers and presentations at policy conferences.
5. Contributing to the capacity building component of ReSAKSS including organizing and implementing policy relevant training for ReSAKSS’ stakeholders.
6. Contributing to the organization of conferences, seminars, and workshops organized or co-organized by ReSAKSS.
The Successful candidate should have:
A Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics, Economics or any other related field.
At least three years post-Ph.D. working experience in research and policy analysis in developing countries, preferably in Africa.
Familiarity with and deep understanding of agricultural and rural development issues in Africa, particularly in the COMESA region.
A good understanding of policy processes in the COMESA region.
Proven analytical and research skills through a track record of scientific publications.
Strong English language skills, both written and spoken, with a demonstrated record of publications in professional outlets. Knowledge of French will be an added advantage.
Ability and willingness to work in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams in a developing country setting. Experience with projects that bridge different approaches and disciplines will be an added advantage.
Experience in making presentations to large audiences at national and regional levels.

The responsibilities of the position will include:
Lead and manage a geographically dispersed international team of economists, social scientists, and livestock scientists addressing determinants of smallholder productivity and access to markets, inputs and knowledge services, and analyzing and testing options for increased productivity and welfare, across a range of countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, and Asia.
Lead conceptual development of ILRI’s work on smallholder competitiveness in multiple crop-livestock systems, and support development of evidence for sustainable productivity interventions to guide appropriate livestock technology and policy development and investments.
Build collaborations with relevant institutions and organizations internationally and nationally to conduct research and to advance project goals of improving smallholder competitiveness and sustained productivity.
Support development projects led by NGOs and other development partners to ensure use of best practice productivity interventions, and to generate objective evidence from piloting those interventions.
Develop proposals to raise resources to support new research addressing smallholder competitiveness in key crop-livestock value chains providing opportunity for addressing poverty and sustainability equitably.

A Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics, Economics, or other Social Science with application to agriculture or rural development, with a minimum of 8 years of experience post-PhD;
A proven research record reflecting experience in research design, quantitative and qualitative analytic methods and producing peer-reviewed outputs;
Experience in managing a multi-disciplinary and multi-national team of researchers and development practitioners, and in the associated human resource and financial management;
Demonstrated strong experience with analysis of smallholder household production and competitiveness, technology uptake, access to markets and services;
Understanding of outcome-oriented research design and implementation with pro-poor and gender oprientation, including communication and advocacy strategy development;
Strong econometric and mathematical modeling skills, and the ability to apply them in pro-poor development research;
Familiarity with aspects of livestock production, crop-livestock systems, and rural institutions and services in developing countries;
Strong English language skills, both written and spoken (proficiency in other languages is an advantage);
Willingness and ability to travel frequently, sometimes to rural areas in developing countries.
Post location: The position is based at ILRI’s Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. Extensive travel to other countries and regions will be required.
Terms of appointment: This is an Internationally Recruited Staff (IRS) position with initial appointment of three years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. ILRI offers a competitive international remuneration package paid in US dollars.

The World Agroforestry Centre (also known as the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry or ICRAF) is an independent research institution which generates science-based knowledge about the complex role trees play in agricultural landscapes and rural livelihoods. As part of the Centre’s work to bring tree-based solutions to bear on poverty and environmental problems, researchers – working in close collaboration with partners – are developing new technologies, tools and policy recommendations for increased food security and ecosystem health.

The post doc will participate in the multi-centre Global Futures project which is coordinated by IFPRI. The post doc will work closely with post docs at ILRI and CIMMYT who will also be based in Nairobi. The ICRAF post doc will focus on enhancing modelling capability and empirical data to be able to assess the likely economic impacts of agroforestry and other natural resource management interventions. The role includes the following responsibilities:
Develop methods for improving CGIAR modelling capability in agroforestry and other natural resource management intervention areas. This may involve the direct enhancement of global models like IMPACT or the enhancement of other models that could be linked up (e.g. DSSAT).
Build up relevant global databases with which to undertake ex ante impact assessments for agroforestry and natural resource management interventions.
Collaborate with other ICRAF staff to identify priority ex ante impact assessments and to identify key model parameters, such as likely adoption trajectories and productivity, equity, income, and environmental service impacts.
Support increased use of ex ante impact assessment tools within ICRAF.
As with all scientists, generate and disseminate scientific publications
Requirements
PHD in natural resources or environmental, agricultural, or development economics preferredWork experience in modeling is an added an advantage
Experience in modelling of large scale or multi-country economic or natural resource management systems.
Use of GAMS programming and familiarity with important models used in the Global Futures project – IMPACT, DREAM, DSSAT
Excellent data management skills and attention to detail
Good communication skills – writing, speaking, listening, discussing
Ability to work in a developing country and in a multicultural environment.
Proficiency in multiple languages is desirable, fluency in English is necessary
