The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works at the crossroads of livestock and poverty, bringing high-quality livestock science, communications and capacity building to bear on poverty reduction and sustainable development. ILRI is one of 15 centres supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). ILRI has campuses in Kenya (headquarters) and Ethiopia, with other offices located in other regions of Africa (Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria) as well as in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka), Southeast Asia (Laos, Thailand, Vietnam) and East Asia (China).
ILRI seeks to recruit a feed specialist at scientist level I to contribute to collaborative projects between teams at ILRI working on smallholder competitiveness (Markets Research Theme) and intensifying livestock systems (People Livestock and Environment Research Theme). The scientist will provide the link between the field and the lab on feed issues as part of ILRI’s ‘value chain development’ teams for a number of current and planned projectsS/he is expected to work with development partners in identifying appropriate feed interventions and experiment with ways of accelerating their uptake. For some projects, the scientist will participate in the design, implementation and testing of feeding strategies as well as evaluation of alternative feed dissemination approaches.
Requirements
A Ph.D. in animal nutrition or related field and at least 2 years post doctoral experience
Experience of working in multi-cultural teams in a developing country setting;
Experience in participatory approaches and understanding of innovation systems and value chain approaches would be an advantage.
Skills in data management and analysis.
Strong English language skills, both written and spoken, with a demonstrated record of publications in professional outlets.
A willingness to travel frequently to countries in Africa and South Asia.
Post location: The position is based at ILRI’s Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.
Duration: 3 year appointment with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding.
