Summary
Cuso International is a leading Canadian NGO working in 20 countries and currently implementing a program portfolio valued at $170 million. Cuso International main areas of interventions are (i) harnessing the power of volunteerism to achieve the SDGs; (ii) advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls; and (iii) improving access to and quality of economic opportunities for young people.
The Head of Programs – Africa (HoP – Africa) will lead the development and implementation of high impact programs that deliver transformational changes across Cuso International’s priority geographic areas in Africa. Currently, Cuso International is implementing multiple programs in six countries (Benin, Cameroon, DRC, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Tanzania) having a total value of $70 million.
The HoP – Africa will also ensure that Cuso International maintains a high profile in relevant networks and will seek to establish, and ensure relationships are built with government, private sector, civil society and donors.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the leadership of the Senior Director, International Programs, The HoP – Africa’s key responsibilities will be:
  • Contribute to the development of Cuso International’s long-term strategic plan and annual operating plan;
  • Ensure the successful delivery of programs within the Africa region, with the objective of meeting commitments to funders/partners and maximizing impact;
  • Lead and support the Country Program Offices (CPOs) in the execution of their respective Annual Operating Plan (activities, deliverables, budget, reporting, impact, learning and program development);
  • Create and maintain relationships with key actors, alliances and donors within the region and steer the development of funding strategies at regional and country levels;
  • Lead the development of new program opportunities in collaboration with the country teams with the objective to grow the presence and the impact of Cuso International in the region.
QUALIFICATIONS & COMPETENCIES
Required
  • Graduate degree in international development, business, economics, public health, or related field;
  • 7+ years of experience in international development, including 5+ years in a leadership role;
  • Previous experience working in Africa and a good understanding of the current development context in Africa;
  • Excellent communication skills with proven ability to work fluently in English and French;
  • Strong awareness of gender & equity issues and knowledge of issues affecting women and youth;
  • Proven management skills (including budgeting and planning process and human resources management);
  • Strong analytical and conceptualization skills and ability to think strategically;
  • Ability to represent the organization to a variety of audiences including the media, government, private sector, donors and civil society;
  • Strong networking skills and the ability to build relationships, alliances and networks in a fast paced ever changing work dynamic;
  • Proven track record of program development and winning funding from variety of sources including the private sector;
  • Proven ability to effectively manage teams in a multi-cultural context and where teams are geographically dispersed;
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently.
Assets
  • Experience working with volunteerism for development (V4D) organizations;
  • Experience working in the development sector in Benin, Cameroon, Ethiopia, DRC, Nigeria or Tanzania;
  • Experience managing programs funded by Global Affairs Canada.
