Legal Advisor at Ecowas Commission

The incumbent will primarily be in charge of providing day-to-day legal advisory support on projects/programmes, conventions, agreements, etc. He/She will draft legal opinions, documents and texts, etc, and will review agreements that the Commission will sign with the partners.

The incumbent will provide legal advice based on the effective and efficient management of risks and the legal needs of each transaction.
  1. Will provide legal opinions and support to the Commission, to the various departments, institutions, centres and agencies of ECOWAS upon request;
  1. Will assist the technical departments within the framework of their projects/programmes and meetings by providing them with the appropriate support;
  1. Will prepare the draft texts and other legal documents for the approval of the Directorate of Legal Affairs and the Commission for their adoption by the various decision-making bodies of ECOWAS;
  1. Will assist the Director, heads of division and section of the Legal Affairs Directorate in their day-to-day activities;
  1. Will ensure documentary research for the drafting of legal opinions by the Directorate of Legal Affairs;
  1. Will represent the Commission before the community courts in case of litigation involving the Commission;
  1. Will liaise with external lawyers and obtain regular updates on ongoing litigation;
  1. Will assist the Directorate of Legal Affairs in the formulation of its annual budget.
  • At least a Bachelor’s degree in Law;
  • Five (5) years professional experience in international law preferably in a law firm.
  • Relevant knowledge of an international organization would be an advantage.
  • Must be computer literate

Age

The officer should not be 50 years old or over at the point of recruitment and must be a citizen of one of the ECOWAS member states.
The candidate must be fluent in one of the three official languages of ECOWAS: English, French and Portuguese. A working knowledge of one of the two other languages would be an advantage.
