IBM Recruits Research Summer Intern-LEADing to Africa

IBM Research has positions available in Smarter Planet, Human-Computer-Interaction (HCI)/Visualization and Mobile Technology Software for students interested in working in our LEADing to Africa Internship Program. These positions are based in the U.S. with the intent to build a channel for IBM’s business in Africa. In Africa, we’ve been changing the way the continent does business for more than 50 years, and as our company continues to grow, we need talented individuals like you.
IBM’s Africa lab in Nairobi, Kenya is the 12th IBM Research lab and our first lab dedicated to a whole continent, officially inaugurated by the President of Kenya HE, Uhuru Kenyatta on November 8, 2013. The lab is located on the campus of the Catholic University in the Karen-Langata area in Nairobi. Our goal is to become a world-class research organization that addresses Africa’s grand challenges by delivering commercially-viable innovations that impacts people’s lives.
We are seeking graduate students interested in research and software engineering to join us to realize our goals of making a difference in people’s lives in Africa. The successful candidates will develop technologies, analytics and algorithms in one of the following areas of Africa’s challenges (just to name of few): Agriculture, Financial Inclusion, Water, Energy, Human Mobility, Education.
The ideal candidate should also have an applied knowledge of visualization (geospatial analysis, spatio-temporal modeling, etc.) and a passion for building systems that apply analytics (data mining, information retrieval, decision-making, predictive modeling, network analysis, machine learning, recommender and filtering systems, etc.) to real world applications. The candidate will thrive in an interdisciplinary team, and, ideally, have a record of designing, building, deploying, and studying next-generation systems and novel user interactions in both mature and emerging markets. Furthermore, the candidate will have demonstrated experience of working and collaborating extensively with clients, business partners, startups, and academia. In addition to a solid research publication record, the ideal candidate is also expected to have tangible impact in the other essential parts of what we do—drive our efforts in developing and deploying software & services for real users at various scales, from small teams to enterprise-wide.
Africa has experienced a significant growth in the adoption of mobile to a point there are more mobile phone subscriptions in Africa than adults. Mobile technologies are a key enabler for business transformation on the continent that is affecting people’s lives in as diverse areas such as agri-business, public heath, mobile money & finance and education. Demonstrate ability to drive projects by leveraging leading edge technologies and practices through innovative software engineering development processes. You will be expected to develop state-of-the-art mobile apps on various devices such as feature phone, smartphones and tablet/ipad, and define and develop innovative technical solutions, and work with business & development teams to ensure these solutions have a significant impact.
The intent of the LEADing to Africa internship program is to build an important recruitment channel for our business in Africa by providing a short-term real world experience in other IBM markets. IBM’s internship programs provide assignments for students to become familiar with IBM’s organization, work style, culture and global reach. Students in this program have expressed interest in working in Africa if such a position is offered after completion of the internship program.   • Bachelor’s Degree
  • English: Intermediate


Preferred

  • Master’s Degree
  • At least 1 year experience in analytics
  • At least 1 year experience in algorithms
  • At least 1 year experience in research experience and/or publication record
  • At least 1 year experience in human computer interaction
  • At least 1 year experience in visualization (geospatial analysis, spatio-temporal modeling, etc.)
  • At least 1 year experience in mobile application development
  • English : Fluent
