Vacancy for Head of Development at Jumia eCommerce (Full Time) – Berlin

Porto Tech Centre (PTC) is Jumia’s IT development center, with around 200 IT-specialists. Porto Tech Centre was created in 2012 with the aim of focusing on IT development. Berlin Tech Centre (BTC) is Jumia’s Berlin IT development center. Newly created, the aim of Berlin Tech Center is to focus first on IT developments relative to Seller Center product, relative to vendor experience.
JUMIA is looking for a talented Head of Development to start a journey relative to vendor experience in its newly formed Berlin Tech Center. This journey objective is to leverage the existing Seller Center product in order to build a true cross border product able to attract international vendors to sell in Africa as a whole country, providing them value-added services around the vendor experience systems. Working in Berlin Tech Centre is a unique opportunity to design and develop smart solutions tailored for a unique and booming e-commerce environment: Africa.
Main Responsibilities
Under the management of the E-Commerce CTO, you must

  • Be part of the E-Commerce governance
    • Participate to the weekly Steering Committee providing the scorecard and KPIs of his activity, as all other managers.
    • Contribute to the IT governance (architecture & software design) to align and guarantee local developments aligned with this governance (guidelines, tools and processes)
  • Manage the local team at BTC
    • Take the ownership of the strategy given by the CTO and ensure this strategy is understood and followed by the whole team.
    • Make the team fully supportive and membership of the company strategy and decisions.
    • Scale the team regarding the workload linked to the roadmap
  • Own the local IT development responsibility and commitment in line with the budget
    • Make sure software developments are fully aligned with business requirements
    • Make sure software developments are aligned with initial estimates
    • Write clean and healthy structured, well-documented code.
    • Build future-proof reusable core code libraries, which can be shared, in-order to drive further efficiencies throughout the team
  • Manage local development
    • Manage an agile team that develops smart solutions on a service oriented architecture using state-of-the-art technologies;
    • Work closely with a multidisciplinary team (Backend developers, DevOps, QA engineers, Product Owners) oriented to continuous delivery;
    • Take ownership for your developments to be qualitatively high.
    • Follow guidelines and processes widely shared among the whole group, in terms of software factory (Tools and practices)

Reporting line:

  • The E-Commerce CTO
  • Member of the IT Steering Committee

Stakeholder interactions:

  • The E-Commerce CTO as Executive manager
  • Governance teams (Architecture and Software design) who defines patterns and guidelines for the group.
  • The Product Owner who defines and manage the product roadmap
  • PTC IT team for development qualification and integration.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in web development with Object Oriented Programming;
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in software team management, teams sized greater or equal to five.
  • Excellent knowledge of PHP5 and Symphony or other OOP language;
  • Excellent knowledge of GoLang
  • Proficient with MySQL, MariaDB or other leading RDBMS;
  • Experienced in web server-side and client-side technologies;
  • Working knowledge of MVC frameworks (Zend Framework, Yii, Symfony2 or similar);
  • Clear understanding of the Internet Protocol Suite;
  • Experienced in Version Control technologies (GIT, SVN);
  • Devops skills (IT automation, coding/scripting)
  • Aware of Performance and Security topics on web development;
  • Fluent in English
