DEPARTMENT AND POSITION SUMMARY:
Americares is seeking a dynamic, driven communications intern to join its Marketing and Communications team. The department is responsible for Americares global messaging, branding and visual identity; developing compelling written and visual content; executing successful public relations campaigns; and supporting the Development team’s communications with key constituents. The communications intern will focus on assisting with media relations and external communications.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Daily/Weekly/Monthly:
1. Draft, proofread and assist with distribution of press releases;
2. Proofread additional marketing and communications materials created by department and others in organization;
3. Assist with creation of press reports on media coverage;
4. Assist with maintenance of communications library (magazines, newspapers and other periodicals);
5. Assist with ordering and distribution of branded apparel and other materials;
6. Perform other duties as required.
Long Term Projects:
1. Build/update media lists and research media contacts, growing ongoing consideration of new media markets;
2. Research industry influencers to determine potential outreach opportunities;
3. Assist with research on news topics in the fields of global health, disaster relief and health care;

SKILLS:
Preferred
1. Formal writing experience;
2. Experience with Adobe Programs, Outlook and PowerPoint;
3. Current college junior or senior.
Required
1. Current undergraduate student, academic majors seeking: English, communications, public relations, journalism and marketing;
2. Career interest in writing, public relations or marketing with an emphasis on global health, international development, emergency response and/or international affairs;
3. Excellent research, proofreading and writing skills;
4. Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel;
5. Strong organizational skills;
6. Outgoing creative thinker with the ability to innovate and take initiative;
7. Team orientation—balance focused on personal accountability and team goals.
EXPERIENCE GAINED
1. Experience communicating effectively verbally and in writing with a variety of audiences;
2. Portfolio of published writing samples;
3. First-hand understanding of how a marketing and communications office functions;
4. Insight into organizational messaging and brand management.
