PURPOSE:
The Communications Coordinator will manage Women for Women International’s media and speaking engagements portfolio. Responsibilities entail documenting and publicizing newsworthy program information and events through pitches and press releases for online, print, television and radio media outlets, fielding journalist requests, and prioritizing and implementing communications and media strategy. Additionally, the communications coordinator will track and process requests for Women for Women International spokespeople, positioning staff speakers and senior staff as experts through leveraging them at appropriate, high-value events.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Serve as coordinating liaison with the media: process journalist inquiries regarding the organization, programs and staff; provide relevant information and facilitate contacts with appropriate spokespeople for interviews.
* Help design and implement media and outreach strategy around newsworthy programs, events and publications.
* Write articles, stories and pitches on newsworthy programs, events, participants and publications.
* Maintain an indexed archive of story resources, including updated profiles of selected participants, success stories, program write ups, and other stories from the field to augment pitches and respond to media requests for programmatic content.
* Serve as departmental liaison with field offices and programs to gather story content and associated photo and video. Work with other department contacts to ensure that needs for field content (story, photo, video) are met across the organization.
* Draft press releases and other communications materials for media, publications and materials as needed.
* Brief and prepare Women for Women International representatives for interviews, including background information and talking points and relevant tips for media coaching.
* Track media hits, working cross-functionally to ensure that media appearances are leveraged across the organization, including online and amongst donors and supporters.
* Maintain updated speaker bios and press kits.
* Position the CEO and other Women for Women International spokespersons as experts on women survivors of war by reviewing meeting, media, speaking, membership and event requests and, in collaboration with a cross functional team, determine which forums provide solid opportunities for growth and exposure. Where scheduling conflicts exist, dispatch other key Women for Women representatives to serve in her stead, when appropriate and feasible, balancing value of engagements against resources and other priorities.
* Work cross-functionally to generate and propagate media content across the organization, including information for revenue generating functions.
* Work closely with related positions, including the media consultant and multimedia & online coordinator, to execute the organization’s media and speaker functions.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
* The ideal candidate has superior organization and prioritization skills as well as attention to detail.
* Ability to communicate effectively with senior executives as well as external contacts.
* Excellent writing skills, capable of meeting tight deadlines, ability to accurately summarize issues; strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Experience writing for newsletter, media or publications strongly preferred.
* Strong ability to speak to multiple audiences, synthesizing complex issues in both written and oral forms.
* Ability to build and maintain excellent working relationships across all levels and functions of a diverse organization.
* Ability to manage multiple priorities and to produce in a fast-paced, diverse and fluid environment.
* Strong computer and basic research skills; good knowledge of Microsoft Office Platform.
* Commitment to grassroots international development and the advancement of women.
* Undergraduate degree with a minimum of 2 years of professional experience, preferably in communications or PR.
* Fluent in English. Proficiency in any of the following languages French, Albanian, Arabic, Swahili, Bosnian, Dari, Pashto or Kinyarwandan a plus.
