Asia Foundation Job: President

The Asia Foundation (TAF) is a San Francisco-based non-profit, non-governmental organization committed to the development of a peaceful, prosperous, just, and open Asia Pacific region. The
Foundation supports programs in Asia that help improve governance, law and civil society; women’s empowerment; economic reform and development; and international relations. Drawing on more than 55 years of experience, the Foundation collaborates with private and public partners to support leadership and institutional development, exchanges, and policy research.

The Foundation’s 19 resident offices in Asia with more than 600 national and expatriate staff are the core of its strength and the basis of the Foundation’s in-depth knowledge of development issues at the local, national, and regional levels. Operating in countries as diverse as China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Afghanistan and Pakistan, the Foundation works with local partners to design and implement programs appropriate to specific country circumstances. Through its programs, the Foundation builds leadership, contributes to improved policies, and strengthens institutional capacity to improve governance and foster greater openness and shared prosperity.
The Foundation has experienced rapid and diversified growth in recent years through grants and cooperative agreements with official development assistance agencies in the U.S., Europe, Australia, Canada, and Asia; international financial institutions including the World Bank and Asian Development Bank; an annual appropriation from the U.S. Congress; and contributions from corporations, foundations and individuals. Its annual budget is approximately $130 million per year.

The Asia Foundation seeks a President who, working closely with a distinguished and active Board of Trustees, will provide direction and strategic vision to advance the Foundation’s leadership in Asian development.
The Role
• Building upon the Foundation’s record of accomplishment and the leadership of the current President, the new CEO will ensure the Foundation’s continued success in implementing innovative programs, diversifying its funding base, disseminating program results to policy makers and development practitioners, and enhancing the Foundation’s reputation for intellectual leadership and program excellence.

• The President is the Chief Executive Officer responsible for managing the strategic, programmatic, and financial operations of the Foundation. He or she will:

• Provide strategic leadership and foster an environment of creativity and innovation;

• Engage trustees and staff in an ongoing process to review the Foundation’s program priorities and strengthen its organizational structure;

• Galvanize the potential of a decentralized organization with its highly capable staff by encouraging program leadership and providing appropriate support functions throughout the organization;

• Ensure the effective communication of TAF’s programs and accomplishments to its multiple stakeholders and constituencies, including the U.S. Congress, U.S. and international development assistance donors, development practitioners, policy makers, and other international leaders.

• Advance a fundraising strategy that facilitates sustainable growth through an appropriate balance of funding from the U.S. Government, foreign governments, development organizations, corporations, foundations, and individuals;

• Travel frequently to interact with the Foundation’s field staff and cultivate personal relationships with donors, program partners, and Asian leaders.
Candidate Profile
The Asia Foundation is seeking a leader of recognized operational excellence, intellectual breadth, convening power, and practical experience in managing a large and complex organization in the nonprofit, governmental, or business sectors. The successful candidate will have outstanding communications skills, substantial personal knowledge of Asia, and a deep commitment to the Foundation’s work in development assistance. He or she will be a widely respected U.S. citizen with a broad global outlook, a sophisticated understanding of how development policy is driven in the U.S. and international contexts, and the personality and skills necessary to gain the confidence of governments, NGOs, development practitioners, and the donor community. He or she will have the highest level of ethics, holding to well-articulated values.

Specific competencies include:

• A leadership style that fosters transparency, openness and mutual respect; encourages a collaborative culture at the Foundation through organizational networking and team building; and sets priorities decisively, delegates responsibilities, and ensures accountability at all levels of the organization;

• Communication and fundraising skills that enable the President to lead effectively the solicitation of funds from major donors in the U.S. and abroad and the management experience to assess whether current systems and organizational structures are appropriate to the demands of continued growth. The President must be comfortable working with Congressional and other leaders in Washington and abroad to maintain and enhance the Foundation’s reputation and funding; and

• Interpersonal skills that contribute to the recruitment, retention, and positive motivation of professional staff, current and prospective donors, and partners. The President will be an inclusive, engaging, and respectful leader who will encourage a sense of community within the Foundation despite geographic distances.
