AFRICAN UNION : POLITICAL OFFICER

The African Union, established as a unique Pan African continental body, is charged with spearheading Africa’s rapid integration and sustainable development by promoting unity, solidarity, cohesion and
cooperation among the peoples of Africa and African States as well as developing a new partnership worldwide. Its Headquarters is located in Addis Ababa, capital city of Ethiopia.


In seeking to achieve this objective, the African Union intends to strengthen its capacity to deliver by, among others, the implementation of its organizational structure and the filling of all vacant posts.



The Commission of the African Union invites applicants who are citizens of Member States for a position of Political Officer in the Department for Political Affairs.

Unit: Department for Political Affairs

Supervisor: Head of Division: Democracy, Governance, Human Rights and Elections (DGHRE)

Duty Station: Addis Ababa



2. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



The Political Officer-Human Rights shall perform the following tasks:



• Providing intellectual and analytical input to advance the work of the AU in priority areas of democracy and governance as well as enhancing the role of civil society in governance processes;



• Organise seminars, workshops and other related activities in the field of democracy and governance with various stakeholders;



• Assist in the implementation of the overall AUC agenda with regards to the participation of civil society;



• Draft speeches, talking points, reports of activities and specific missions;



• Provide advice on Democracy and governance issues, including input into official communications, statements and other documents;



• Liaise with the AU Regional Offices on democracy and governance issues;



• Assist in developing and maintaining appropriate working relations with AU Organs and partners of African Union on issues relating to democracy and goof governance;



• Perform any other relevant tasks assigned by supervisor.





3. EDUCATONAL QUALIFICATIONS:



Candidates must have at least a university Degree, preferably Masters Degree in Political Science, International Relations, Law or other disciplines related to democracy and good governance.



4. WORK EXPERIENCE:



Candidates must have at least 5 years of relevant working experience in the area of democracy and good governance, including experience in capacity building, training, technical cooperation activities, planning and budgeting.



5. OTHER RELEVANT SKILLS:



• Computer literacy;

• Ability to work in a team and maintain team spirit.

• Ability to work under pressure, and to act with discretion in a politically sensitive environment and to establish good working relationship both with Government authorities and colleagues

• Excellent drafting and reporting skills;

• Good communication and negotiating skills;

• Good planning and organizational skills.



6. LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT:



Proficiency in one of the African Union working languages. Knowledge of one or several other working languages would be an added advantage.







7. AGE REQUIREMENT:



Candidates must preferably be between 25 and 35 years old.



8. TENURE OF APPOINTMENT:



The appointment will be made on a fixed term contract for a period of three (3) years, of which the first twelve months will be considered as a probationary period. Thereafter, the contract will be for a period of two years renewable, subject to satisfactory performance.

11. REMUNERATION:



Indicative basic salary of US$27,892.00 per annum plus other related entitlements e.g. post adjustment (40% of basic salary), housing allowance (US$12,012.00 per annum), education allowance (75% of tuition and other related expenses for every eligible dependent up to a maximum of US$6,500.00 per child per annum), etc for internationally recruited staff of the Commission.
