The Position
ILRI seeks to recruit a Barman/Waiter within the Housing, Catering and Conferencing unit whose job purpose is to provide food and beverage services to ILRI staff and other guests.
Responsibilities
  • Ensure the bar is adequately stocked at all times;
  • Ensure that there are no expired items are in the bar stock;
  • Perform and monitor the movement of stock at the bar;
  • Collect cash for items served and deposit with the cashier daily;
  • Promote beverage sales;
  • Ensure proper storage and care of operating equipment;
  • Ensure prompt service and clearance at the bar counter and bar surrounding area;
  • Ensure a comprehensive handover is performed with all in-coming shift staff;
  • Ensure general cleanliness in the bar area at all times.
 Requirements
  • Minimum Diploma in Food and Beverage services;
  • Minimum 2 years’ relevant experience;
  • Good computer skills in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook;
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
Terms of appointment
This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus and is open to Kenyan nationals only.  The position is on a 2-year renewable contract subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
Job level and salary
This position is job Grade 1B, Level 2 with a starting gross salary of KES 34,000 per month. This is exclusive of other benefits provided within ILRI’s Nationally Recruited Staff Scheme.

The Position
ILRI seeks to recruit a Food and Beverage Supervisor to supervise all the activities of the Food and Beverage services area within the Housing, Catering and Conferencing unit, so as to provide efficient and timely service for ILRI staff, hosted organizations and other guests.


Responsibilities
1)    Managing Team
  • Supervise and coordinate the day to day activities in the cafeteria and the bar and conferencing areas so as to deliver complete food and beverage services to clients;
  • Compile on a daily, weekly and monthly basis all relevant food and beverage information sales reports and submit to the Housing, Catering and Conferencing Manager;
  • Work closely with the chef in the preparation of a variety of international dishes;
  • Ensure that high standards of hygiene are maintained and that the necessary periodical health and safety preventive measures are taken (pest control and regular cleaning procedures, etc.) within the food service areas;
  • Submit a report on the monthly stocks  used, income, utensils, crockery and cutlery loss/breakage by the 10th of every month;
  • Submit a report on the number and types of functions held, the number of guests served/covers in the cafeteria by the 10th of every month;
  • Supervise monthly stock take of the cutlery, linen, furniture, equipment and bar stock.
2)    Managing Resources (Material, Information & Financial)
  • Supervise and coordinate the day to day activities, in the cafeteria, bar and conferencing areas so as to deliver complete food and beverage services to clients;
  • Compile on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, all relevant food and beverage information/reports on sales and submit to the Housing, Catering and Conferencing Manager;

  • Safeguard the Institute’s property and ensure its proper utilization;
  • Maintain effective control of food and beverage materials in the bar area, labour and equipment use and provide timely information to the Housing, Catering and Conferencing Manager for budget preparation, replacement of equipment, new staff and any major repairs;
  • Ensure there is efficient and proper filing and records documentation in the Catering unit.
Requirements
  • Minimum Diploma in Food and Beverage Management;
  • Diploma in Food Production will be an added advantage;
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience in a similar position with a reputable hotel or institution;
  • Experience in a leading busy catering (conferencing, bar and restaurant) unit in a demanding environment;
  • Well developed computer skills in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook;
  • Good personal organization skills, accuracy and attention to detail required;
  • Highly effective multi-tasking skills, with ability to coordinate, prioritize, and organize work load, meet deadlines and work under pressure;
  • Capacity to take initiative, demonstrate good judgment and work under minimal supervision;
  • Good written and oral communication skills.

Terms of appointment
