The Court Interpreter (English) will be expected to:
(a) provide simultaneous interpretation of court proceedings and high level events held at the seat of the Court or elsewhere, from French into English while observing the terminology and usage of the Court;
(b) provide consecutive and chuchotage interpretation, as well as sight translation, from French into English;
(c) prepare and maintain case-related information package, including confidential filings, prepare thoroughly for interpretation assignments;
(d) act as chef d'équipe on a rotating basis;
(e) organise and teach training sessions in interpretation skills as directed by the Chief of Section and in coordination with the Head of the Interpretation Unit and the Court Interpreter Trainer; mentor less-experienced interpreters;
(f) participate in the testing and recruitment of staff and freelance interpreters;
(g) actively contribute to the terminology and reference databases of the Section;
(h) participate in Section working groups and perform other tasks as required by the Chief of Section, including translation, editing or revision if necessary; and
(i) deputise for the Head of the Interpretation Unit in his or her absence.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
The successful candidate will possess:
(a) an advanced university degree in interpretation, translation, languages or the law;
(b) at least seven years (nine years in the case of a first level university degree) of simultaneous interpretation experience, preferably in an international court or an international organisation;
(c) a qualification in interpretation training, alternatively experience in training;
(d) a thorough knowledge of the ethics governing court interpretation;
(e) a comprehensive understanding of the International Criminal Court’s basic documents and the specificities of court interpretation, also with regard to the uses of new technologies;
(f) excellent analytical, organisational, planning, and IT skills;
(g) excellent interpersonal skills, tact and discretion;
(h) demonstrated ability to work in a team, flexibility, initiative and openness to skills development.
KNOWLEDGE OF LANGUAGES
Mother tongue proficiency in English, excellent proficiency in French, knowledge of a third official language of the Court (Arabic, Chinese, Spanish or Russian) would be considered an asset.
Short-listed candidates will be invited to take the ICC interpretation test.
