RAINFED LOWLAND RICE BREEDER
The Africa Rice Center (WARDA) is looking for a highly qualified Rainfed Lowland Rice Breeder.
The Africa Rice Center is an association of 23 African member states and one of the 15 international Centers supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The Center’s mission is to contribute to poverty alleviation and food security in Africa,through research, development and partnership activities aimed at increasing the productivity and profitability of the rice sector in ways that ensure the sustainability of the farming environment. The
Africa Rice Center is temporarily headquartered in Cotonou, Benin, which offers good living conditions, with excellent international schools for both French- and English-speaking students.

Given the potential of the rainfed lowland systems in sub-Saharan Africa, the Africa Rice Center is
considering to strengthen its capacity in lowland rice breeding through an IRS position.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will be hosted at the temporary headquarters of the Africa Rice Center in
Cotonou, Benin. He/she will be mostly involved in activities of genetic improvement and be a
member of the Genetic Diversity and Breeding program (Program 1)
Under the direct supervision of the Program 1 leader, the successful candidate will:
• Develop high yielding varieties for the rainfed lowland ecosystem that combine various
positive agronomic traits and desirable grain quality characteristics using both conventional
and marker-assisted breeding
• Contribute to the establishment of appropriate rice breeding objectives using farmers
participatory approaches and a profound understanding of the target population of
environments
• Evaluate promising varieties/lines under an appropriate range of environmental and
management conditions in close collaboration with other scientists at the Africa Rice Center,NARS and IRRI
• Contribute to a major effort to introduce marker – assisted recurrent selection procedures in WARDA’s breeding programs.
• Assist in setting up a new breeding network in SSA and contribute to network activities such
as germplasm/information exchange, capacity building etc.
• Assist economists in their impact studies
• Publish in international refereed journals
• Provide inputs to donor reports in a timely manner
• Contribute to proposal writing
• Conduct any other duties as requested by Program 1 Leader
REQUIREMENTS:
o PhD in rice breeding, genetics, crop science, seeds technology or other related fields with
a minimum of 3 years experience.
o Excellent knowledge of statistics including field experimental design.
o Familiarity with rice research and the ability to communicate in both English and French
would be distinct advantages.
o Abilities to efficiently work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team and to take
responsibilities for tasks with minimal supervision are both essential.
o Research experience in SSA is an asset.
DURATION OF THE APPOINTMENT: Initial appointment is for two years. WARDA offers an
