This post attracts a generous benefits package, including 32 days’ leave and civil service pension arrangements, and benefits from a range of family-friendly policies.

Who we are

Connecting the UK to the world and the world to the UK, the British Council is the UK’s international cultural relations body. In an inter-dependent, turbulent world we believe that creating opportunities for people to understand each other better, work together more and learn from one another is crucial to building secure, more prosperous and sustainable futures for us all.

Our activities - whether in the arts, science, sport, English teaching, climate change or education - nurture greater trust and understanding between different countries and cultures. They also build strong international links to and from Britain, opening doors for the UK onto the rest of the world and for the world back to the UK. Our work gives people - both in Britain and across the hundred-plus countries we work in - opportunities to learn, share and connect worldwide.

How We Work

The Press Office team in London plays a major role in highlighting and explaining the cultural relations work of the British Council. We focus on the UK media but also raise awareness of the British Council’s work internationally. We plan and coordinate media campaigns to reach new and existing audiences and work to bring to life the range of work the British Council is doing for the UK around the world.

We work closely with colleagues overseas and in the UK to share information, identify opportunities and build understanding of effective media work. The Press Office is responsible for identifying and managing reputational risks and handling the occasional crises that happen in a large international organisation.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Senior Press Officer your role will be to liaise with regional and UK based communications colleagues to generate profile and manage risk relating to several regions of the world. In addition you will be responsible for the media relations strategy around a number of our specialist areas of work such as Climate Change and Science. You will advise teams on UK media work, organise networking and briefing opportunities and drive proactive, quality coverage in target media, landing strong messages about the British Council’s cultural relations work in this area.

We expect you to be able to build strong relationships with internal colleagues and to develop a real understanding of the British Council’s work and objectives in designated areas.

You are expected to demonstrate previous Press Office experience, to have a strong set of media contacts and be able to give expert advice on all elements of media handling to colleagues both overseas and in the UK.

Additionally, you should be able to proactively prepare, edit and upload material for the corporate website and work closely with the web team on creative planning and material gathering.
